The immense power of water and the need for caution

Water is life, yet in its fury, it is also an unstoppable force. A single moment of misjudgment can turn the gentle flow of a stream into a perilous current, sweeping away even the strongest among us.

Please, PLEASE never risk swimming in or driving through floodwaters. What seems passable can be deceptive; depths conceal danger, and currents hold unimaginable strength. It is not only your life at stake but also the lives of those who may have to risk their own to save you.

Today, tragedy struck at Wild Cattle Creek Bridge less than 200 metres near a place I once called home for seven years in Megan, on the Dorrigo Plateau that has experienced unrelenting rain for days. The bridge was swallowed as usual by a torrent of mountain floodwaters. I have seen firsthand many times how quickly that peaceful crossing can turn into a deadly force.

I pray for this man and his loved ones.

Nature does not grant second chances. Let patience and caution guide you. Your life is precious. Wait for the waters to recede.

America, it's unconscionable that 47 makes enemies of allies and supports dictators. The tariff wars are backfiring. Countries are looking for alternative markets. As in the case of Israel, people are refusing to buy products made in the US or travel to your once magnificent country. It's tragic to see it crumble from within and on the world stage.

Beware the leader who turns allies into enemies and bows to tyrants, because through tariff wars and blind loyalty, the greatness of a nation is lost; shunned by markets, abandoned by travellers and crumbling from within.

Only the people can resist the chainsaw mob consisting of the 1% billionaires.
'Woke' equals CARING.
Don't be fooled.

Emergency services and officials are doing an outstanding job, and now is a time for wisdom, resilience, and steady hearts. Jim Chalmers, Treasurer is anticipating billions of dollars of damage. I am in touch with dear friends in Queensland and Northern NSW, all of whom have prepared as best they can. As Elders, they understand both the practical and emotional needs that may arise in the days ahead. May clarity, strength, and care guide us all.

Prayers for everyone in the path of Cyclone Alfred

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves towards South East Queensland, NNSW and Mid-NSW and is expected to make landfall around 2am on Friday, businesses are taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks of the predicted destructive winds, heavy rainfall and potential flooding. Many businesses are temporarily shutting down their operations to ensure the safety of employees, customers and property. This includes securing buildings by barricading windows, moving stock to higher ground and suspending services, such as rubbish collection in Brisbane, which was restricted to red bins on 5 March and stopped altogether from 6 March.

Smaller businesses are closing indefinitely after 5 March to await the impact of the cyclone, reflecting the general trend to prioritise safety and preparation over normal operations in the face of this rare and potentially historic weather event. Please take all precautions and do not drive through floods.

I listened to 47's address to Congress, and as expected, it was a carefully staged presentation. I had hoped to hear concrete plans to support the disadvantaged, the working class and the many people who are suffering under current policies - facing job losses, financial hardship and insecurity. But there was little to reassure them. Health? Not a mention except for a nod to Bobby Kennedy. Education? Absent. Housing? Rent? Overlooked. Living wage? Nope. Climate measures? Neglected. Older adults? No.

Instead, the focus was on policies that favour the wealthiest - prioritising expansion and development that primarily benefit the advantaged billionaires many of whom were in the audience. Once again, those most in need were left without recognition or support.

While attention is still focused on the shenanigans in one part of the world in Washington DC, a deeper change is quietly occurring.

The world feels like it's holding its breath. Many are hurting, and our attention is focused on the raw and confused aftermath of the press conference in the Oval Office on Friday 28 February 2025; a moment that would hopefully would have embodied diplomacy but instead deepened division.

The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was meant to inspire unity, but many were outraged by the lack of wisdom and measured US leadership and are unsure of the immediate and long-term consequences.

Yet, beyond the turmoil, something essential is stirring; something that invites us to embrace the unknown with confidence, to soften rather than harden, and to be there for each other with as much love as we can muster, even as personal and collective challenges impact us.

Mother Earth is also changing in her own way, through storms, quakes and upheavals that can shake us to the core. These trials can break our hearts and test even the strongest among us, but they also hold a quiet promise: the chance to grow closer together, to find resilience in shared vulnerability and to listen to the whispers of healing and progress in order to evolve rather than crumble. Now is the time to bring out the best in ourselves, to strengthen our connections to our loved ones and community, and to move forward not in fear, but with a deeper sense of purpose and care.
