The question is whether Albanese, Marles, and Wong will meekly follow the U.S., as Howard, Hill, and Downer did in 2003, into yet another ill-conceived war driven by American warmongering. Make no mistake: any new large-scale conflict will devastate not only the so-called 'enemy' but also bring destruction to home shores. President Joe Biden has authorised the use of US long-range missiles (ATACMS) by Ukraine to strike military targets on Russian territory. This decision represents a significant shift in US policy, which has so far restricted the use of American weapons by Ukraine to targets within its borders or along the immediate front lines. This is intended to help Ukraine respond to the recent increase in Russian missile and drone attacks, which have targeted civilian infrastructure and killed many civilians.
Russia has labelled the decision 'reckless' and warned that it will escalate the conflict and increase the risk of a wider international confrontation. Russian officials have threatened possible retaliatory measures, such as intensifying their own attacks or supplying advanced weapons to opponents of the US or NATO. In addition, North Korea has deployed troops to support the Russian armed forces, making the geopolitical dynamic even more complex. The likelihood of a direct conflict between NATO and Russia remains uncertain, but is heightened as this escalation could result in severe retaliation from Moscow. However, Western states, including the US, are probably assuming that a controlled escalation can help prevent further aggression from Russia. The situation remains tense and harbours the risk of miscalculation on both sides. The book describes a recurring generational cycle in history, known as the Saeculum, which lasts roughly 80–100 years and consists of four 'turnings,' or stages. Each turning represents a phase in societal change: The High: A period of rebuilding and strong institutions following a crisis, characterised by optimism and collective progress. The Awakening: A time of cultural upheaval and focus on individuality, often marked by questioning societal norms. The Unravelling: A period of weakening institutions, rising individualism, and social division. The Crisis (Fourth Turning): A time of upheaval and existential threat where old systems are replaced with new ones, typically involving significant conflict or restructuring. 'This IS the Fourth Turning,' asserts that we are currently in this final stage of the cycle; a time of crisis and transformation. This stage is marked by chaos, but also by an opportunity for rebuilding society in new ways. It often involves challenges like war, economic upheaval, or political realignment, followed by a renewal phase.
