* Watch the sunrise or sunset
Head to a scenic spot like a hill, beach or open field to experience the longest day (Northern Hemisphere) or the shortest day (Southern Hemisphere). Bring a blanket and some snacks, and think about the changing seasons. Stonehenge in England or local observatories often organise solstice sunrise events.
Take part in a solstice festival or event
In many cultures, the solstice is celebrated with festivals. In the northern hemisphere, you can take part in events such as the Swedish midsummer celebrations with maypole dancing and bonfires or yoga gatherings such as those in Times Square in New York. In the southern hemisphere, Indigenous Australian communities may hold winter solstice ceremonies- find out about local cultural events.
