This week marks quite a milestone. Exactly one year ago, I began writing my handbook on death, dying, grief, and the afterlife. Although I have dedicated most of my days and many nights to this project, I expect to spend most of 2024 continuing to write my swan-song.
I recently completed a comprehensive section on 'Overcoming the Fear of Death'. While most topics span two or three pages, this one demanded a more in-depth exploration.
Through numerous conversations and extensive research, I realised how many people avoid the sensitive topic of death because they fear, and in some cases dread, their own mortality or that of a loved one.
This avoidance deeply concerns me. When people approach the end of their lives unprepared, they often leave their last months or weeks on earth to an overstretched medical profession and grieving loved ones who have to deal with post-death procedures, funerals, possessions, estates and so on.
The internet is an invaluable resource and I provide suggestions for further research on each topic. My aim is to help readers prepare emotionally, practically, physically and spiritually for this final phase of life and their impending death and what may lie beyond.
A wise woman once said: 'The greatest gift you can leave your loved ones is a well-crafted will and happy memories'. I would add to that: 'a well-planned end-of-life'. When you are prepared for the death of your physical body and are aware of the possible journey of your soul, you give yourself sweet satisfaction and peace.
Here are my suggestions for online research:
- How to overcome the fear of death
- Parenting and education about death
- End of life meditation and mindfulness
- Lessons to learn from people facing death
- How to enjoy the last months and weeks of your life
